There are few hobbies more relaxing than fishing. Whether you are on a boat or a riverbank, spending a day out in the sun with a rod in one hand and a beer in the other, is one of my favorite ways to kill time.

However, while fishing is very relaxing, it also requires a lot of precision and skill if you want to land a good catch.

Casting your line, choosing the right bait, and reeling in your catch-all take a lot of practice to get right.

Even if you have the skills, if you aren't using the right equipment, then you are unlikely to get anything to bite.

For instance, not all types of fishing lines are the same, and some will work better for catching different types of fish.

At one point, fluorocarbon fishing lines were only used for fishing in saltwater environments.

However, it is now one of the most popular types of line for casting off in almost any body of water, from lakes to rivers.

This is because the line is much stretchier and more durable than other varieties of fishing lines, while also being less visible to fish.

In this article, we will show you the 7 best fluorocarbon lines that you can buy for your next fishing trip.

Seaguar Invizx 100% Fluorocarbon 200 Yard Fishing Line

Seaguar Invizx 100% Fluorocarbon 200 Yard Fishing Line (12-Pound)

The Seaguar Invizx line is made up of 100% fluorocarbon. It has been designed specifically for use by anglers who need a line that is almost completely invisible to the fish they are trying to catch.

This line can be used on both spinning and baitcasting reels, which makes it suitable for all kinds of applications, including fly-fishing.

The line is easy to cast and handle, making it perfect for beginners as well as experienced fishermen.

In addition, it is abrasion resistant, and as such, is less likely to break when it rubs against rocks or the sides of your boat.

One of the best features of this line is its strength and Seaguar promise that it is at least 42% stronger than other comparable fluorocarbon lines.

All of these features combine to make a reliable line that can be used to catch most sizes of fish, no matter how large or heavy they may be.

You can buy different lengths of the line as well as various thicknesses for handling heavier catches.

If you're worried that fish can see your line and that it is putting them off taking the bait, then Invizx may be just what you need.

Pros

  • Offers a great feel and smooth handling when casting.
  • Strong and durable line.
  • Abrasion-resistant.
  • Virtually invisible once underwater.

P-Line Floroclear Clear Fishing Line

P-Line Floroclear Filler Spool (300-Yard, 6-Pound)

This is another line that is designed to be practically invisible to fish once it is underwater.

The P-Line line is made up of a clear monofilament with a special fluorocarbon coating to make it even harder to see, especially for fish.

As such, this is a great product for anybody looking for an invisible fishing line that won't break the bank.

It is also an extremely strong line, so any knots that you tie with it are unlikely to come undone.

It is available in weights up to 30lbs, so it will be very well suited for catching large, heavy fish that can put up a bit of a fight when you are reeling them in.

Another thing that lots of anglers love about this line is its incredible castability.

Whether you are using a spinning or baitcasting reel, you should have no problem casting out this line.

One of the reasons for this is that this line has low memory, which means it won't develop curls or kinks from being wrapped around the spool.

Pros

  • Fluorocarbon line with a special coating that makes it harder for fish to see.
  • Has a high strength, which makes it great for tying knots.
  • Offers awesome castability and low memory.

This line is made up of a copolymer core with a fluorocarbon coating that helps to make it less visible to fish.

As such, you have a product that can refract light underwater to appear invisible to fish, while also having a low memory and high strength of copolymer lines.

You can choose between multiple different weights of the line for catching all sizes of fish.

As well as being very strong, this line has low stretch, which will help with reeling in your catch once it has taken the bait.

As such, this is a line that is highly durable and offers great knot strength if you want to attach it to a different type of line.

Due to its hybrid composition, FluoroKote is a little cheaper than many pure fluorocarbon lines.

As such, it is a great choice for any angler working on a budget who needs a strong, reliable line that won't break the bank.

This product is also very resistant to abrasion, which means it is less likely to break no matter what conditions you are fishing in.

Seaguar AbrazX

Seaguar Abrazx 100% Fluorocarbon 200 Yard Fishing Line (15-Pound), Clear, Model:15AX200

The Seaguar AbrazX line is the product for any angler that wants a durable, tough fluorocarbon line for turbulent waters and large fish.

This is a line that is built to maximize durability so that you can tie knots with it, or use it as your main line without the risk of it breaking.

As such, it is a great product for heavy cover fishing, where your line is more likely to get snagged on branches or other objects sitting in the water.

You can use this line to tie knots, which makes it ideal for use as a leading line.

Due to its higher toughness, this product has a reasonably high memory, which may make it slightly stiffer.

This means that you may find it a little harder to cast with this line, but it is very worth it for heavy cover fishing.

Most overlines would snap or break if cast into water that has pieces of wood, or other vegetation growing in it.

This product, however, is resistant to abrasion and knicks, making it perfectly suitable for these environments.

Naturally, you will have to spend a little more for it, but given its durability, you may end up saving money on broken lines in the long run.

Pros

  • Very durable and long-lasting.
  • Made from 100% fluorocarbon to make it practically invisible underwater.
  • Abrasion-resistant and perfect for heavy cover fishing.

Cons

  • This is a stiffer line with a high memory.

If you are looking for a strong and flexible fluorocarbon line, then Berkley Vanish may be the best option for you.

This 100% fluorocarbon line is completely nonabsorbent to provide much higher strength underwater, which makes it great for a leading line.

This line is designed to give you maximum control when casting, while also giving you a smooth finish when retrieving your lure.

It is also made to be extremely light, which helps reduce drag and increase speed.

As such, this line is perfect for those who like to cast their lures with precision.

While this line is good for casting small lures, it is also excellent for tying knots.

This makes it a good choice for beginners, as well as experts.

While most anglers would expect a line this strong to be stiff, it actually has very low memory, so it shouldn’t get kinked or bent when you wrap it around your spool.

This product works equally well for casting and spinning reels, and you can use it for either regular fishing or fly-fishing.

Like most Berkley products, this line is pretty much invisible once it is underwater, so you won't have to worry about scaring away your next catch.

Sunline Super FC Sniper Fluorocarbon Fishing Line

Sunline Super FC Sniper Fluorocarbon Fishing Line (Natural Clear, 5-Pounds/200-Yards)

The Sunline Super FC sniper line is one of the best lines available today for smooth and easy casting.

This 100% fluorinated line is designed to withstand extreme conditions, with a coating made from three layers of resin.

This offers superior abrasion resistance, which means you can fish in shallower waters where there is a lot of cover.

When you first start using this line, you might notice that it feels slightly different than other fluorocarbons.

This is because it is generally much softer and more supple than its competition, thanks to the aforementioned resin coating.

As such, this product has a low memory and will cast very smoothly in the hands of an experienced angler.

Another great feature of this line is its sensitivity, which allows you to have more control when reeling in your catch.

If you want a good product for beginners struggling to learn how to cast their line correctly, then this may be the right choice for you.

The only thing that isn't great for is tying knots, as the resin coating doesn’t offer enough friction for attaching to other types of lines.

Pros

  • Designed for a smooth casting experience.
  • Great abrasion resistance.
  • Sensitive line that will make reeling in your catch much easier.

Cons

  • Poor knot strength

Best Fluorocarbon Line - Buyers Guide

Buying fishing line may seem simple, but there are actually a lot of things to consider to make sure you get a product that works for you.

There are several factors that differentiate the various brands of fishing line.

In this section, we will cover some of these factors, so you will have an easier time finding the right line for your next fishing trip.

Where Do You Fish?

Different types of lines will be better suited to fishing in different bodies of water.

Fluorocarbon lines will work equally well in both fresh and saltwater conditions.

However, shallower areas such as lakes or rivers may have more debris lying beneath the surface of the water.

Water that has branches, tall grass or other types of obstacles lying in it, is referred to as heavy cover.

Fish will often stick close to this cover to avoid predators, and in order to catch them, you will need a durable line that is resistant to abrasions.

However, if you are fishing for larger fish in more open bodies of water, then you will want a line that has good knot strength.

This is because you will rarely only use one type of line on their fishing rod.

Often you will tie together two different types of lines so that you can combine their advantages and mitigate some of their drawbacks.

Line Strength And Stretch

When shopping for a fishing line, you will want to buy one that is strong enough for reeling in your catch, even when it fights back.

As well as making sure the line itself is strong, you want any knots that you tie with it to be strong as well.

Generally, you don't want your line to stretch a lot when put under pressure.

This may increase the chance of your catch escaping and your line breaking while you are reeling it in.

Memory

The way that a line behaves after it has been wrapped around a spool and used is known as its memory.

Lines with lots of memory will naturally bend and kink after being spooled up, which can make them much slower to cast.

More durable brands may be much stiffer and therefore have a higher memory, but this is because they are thicker and tougher.

Unless you need a very durable line, it is important to buy one with as low memory as possible to make it easier to cast and use.

Visibility

If a fish sees the line attached to your bait, it may be scared away and be less likely to bite.

One of the main advantages of fluorocarbon lines is that they are practically invisible once they are underwater.

Some lines that are made from more than one material may be stronger or more durable, but more visible.

As such, you want to balance the durability of a line with how easy it will be for a fish to see it.

If you want a line that is as close to invisible as you can get, then look for one that is made from 100% fluorocarbon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Continue reading for some FAQs and answers on using a Fluorocarbon line.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Fluorocarbon Line?

Fluorocarbon refracts light when it is underwater, which makes it incredibly difficult to see.

Its low visibility makes it a great leading line, since the fish are less likely to detect it and be scared away.

Generally, fluorocarbon lines have a lot of qualities that make them great leading lines.

They have high abrasion resistance, which means they can scrap over rocks or submerged branches without breaking.

They are also generally quite strong, but still sensitive enough that you can more control when reeling in your catch.

Can I Put Fluorocarbon Line On A Spinning Reel?

You can use a fluorocarbon line on both baitcasting and spinning reels.

However, for spinning reels, it is recommended to not use a line with a higher weight than 8 lbs.

Any heavier and you risk your line getting easily tangled when you cast it out. Once it is tangled it will take a long time to get your line back in order.

What Is The Best Knot For Fluorocarbon Line?

The Palomar knot is the best choice for fluorocarbon line since it is very easy to tie and won't compromise the overall strength of your line.
