There are so many different types of pellet grills available on the market these days.
When you’re looking to buy one, you’ll undoubtedly want to be sure that you’re buying the best quality that is budget-friendly.
Pit Boss has long been renowned for its pellet grills, and the Austin XL is among one of its more popular models.
With almost a thousand square inches for you to smoke and flame grill with, you may ask yourself what else I need?
Well, we’ve tried and tested the Pit Boss Austin XL and provided our take on it below with this handy review.
Read on to learn more about our Pit Boss Austin XL Review!
We’ll kick this review off by giving you the low-down on this pellet grill, as simple as it gets.
This is a tough, heavy-duty pellet grill with a powder-coated steel body and porcelain-coated steel grates for cooking on.
With almost a thousand square inches for you to do so, you’ve got a massive cooking capacity - one of the biggest ones available on the market today.
It also has a super-size pellet hopper and a purge system that automatically removes unused or unwanted pellets.
Everything is so easy with the Pit Boss Austin XL.
It has an auto-stop function for your safety and means you don’t have to worry about checking on things all the time.
It has a fully functioning LED control panel, extremely reliable heat regulation and a great range of temperature for your smoking and grilling needs.
This machine also comes with a couple of fantastic added extras. You’ll notice you’re provided with:
With all of these features and additional extras, what more could you ask for, right?
We’ll now take you through what we thought about this pellet grill. We’ll look at everything in more detail in handy chunks.
Just by looking at this machine, you can admire its power and sturdiness of it.
You can tell you’ll not get any trouble of leakage or alike with this.
It’s so simple to clean this because of the materials used to create it - the porcelain-coated racks.
It’s entirely an impressive construction, and everything looks… right.
You admire the placement of added extras and how classy the removable serving tray is.
Of course, it’s all good having a great looking pellet grill - but how does it actually perform?
We can happily say that this is one of the best pellet grills to smoke your food with.
With the choice of temperature at your disposal, you can go right ahead and cook things the way you want to - and that really impressed us.
The fact that the cooking style and method of cooking are entirely up to you really made us happy.
You want to sear over an open flame? No problem!
You can cook just about anything using this machine, even woodfire pizza!
With such a large cooking capacity, you don’t have to worry about cooking in batches.
You can straight up put whatever you want to cook on here.
You can do so on the two large racks that are set out ready for you - but don’t worry about the heat being unevenly distributed because this machine has smart convection fans, which means the top and bottom racks are the same when it comes to the heat.
One thing we would have liked to have seen with this machine, though is Wi-Fi capabilities.
Unfortunately, this is one area where it has a drawback, as so many other models do have the ability to connect to third-party apps and your cell phone.
Having said that, though, it does have the auto stop function with a highly reliable temperature regulator, which almost works as if you’d do it yourself through a third-party app, so maybe it’s not all bad there.
Additionally, we’ve found that the temperature accuracy was pretty much exact and allowed for smoking even in poorer outdoor conditions.
Too few pellet smokers can allow for open flame grilling or the ability to wood fire things like pizzas, and we loved the fact that this one does.
So, if you’re fancying a burger or a pizza during the week - why not fire up this monster to satisfy your wants?
We sort of mentioned this earlier, but very briefly - we absolutely loved how simple this pellet smoker is to clean.
So few smokers on the market make it as easy to go from grease and grime to sublime in seconds.
The Pit Boss Austin XL made the cleaning process feel as if we weren’t even doing much.
The porcelain coating means that it’s easy to wipe over using the correct cleaning products.
The pellet clear-out door comes right out in moments and makes replacement as easy as pie.
However, if we are being really critical - we have to pick up on the firepot.
Many pellet smokers on the market now make the firepot cleaning easy with ash clean up systems in place, but this one’s design makes it really difficult.
If you’ve got an industrial vacuum with the right connections, you won’t find it too hard to clear up the ash though.
The thing is, whilst we were able to easily clear the ash up with our vacuum, we can understand that not everyone will be able to.
However, when we did a full clean up after use (and after everything went cold, of course), it took us minutes to clean up the whole machine.
So, if you’re anything like us - you’ll absolutely love the cleaning process for this.
We’ve got to be in agreement that anything extra is fantastic - and when it comes to handy things like the meat probe thermometer, you can’t be more satisfied.
The meat probes are really accurate and one of the best things to have included within the price.
Almost always, you will need to find yourself a meat probe to ensure safe cooking, especially when it comes to pellet smoking or grilling.
Meat probes are rarely cheap and are often difficult to find - so we’re really pleased that we received not one, but two for free!
We made some fantastic food with this machine. Every single time, we were impressed with how well the food turned out.
The quality was high, the taste was amazing and the cooking method was easy.
You really can’t debate about using a pellet smoker if the food quality is altered, because it is - just for the better!
We’ve seen so many fantastic points for this machine and also a few downsides. Let’s look at them at a glance.
As you can see, there are way more positives than negatives for this machine.
However, these two cons can make or break a sale for some - and we can totally understand that.
However, the Wi-Fi connection is not necessarily required due to this machine having a reliable temperature control and auto stop.
Connecting to your cell phone is normally a way just to control your temperature - so this makes Wi-Fi connectivity pointless anyway.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, there are a number of questions that are often asked by potential customers for this type of machine.
If you’re someone that enjoys cooking outdoors, barbecue food or simply a fan of different methods of cooking - then we’d say that a pellet grill is definitely for you.
We found that a pellet grill is one of those machines that you may not think you need, but once you have one - you’ll never go back and you’ll find yourself using it almost all the time.
As a general rule of thumb, we’d say the maximum is around 12 hours - so if you’re planning on having an evening barbeque, get that meat on the go early!
The Pit Boss Austin XL is one of the top models of a pellet smoker available on the market.
Whilst it does have a couple of downsides, the positives outweigh them massively, so it’s definitely worth a look!
