Lunazul Tequila is bottled and distilled at the Tierra de Agaves Distillery in Mexico with 100% Blue Agave.
Francisco Beckmann is the founder of Tierra de Agaves, founded in Jalisco back in 2002.
He was also the co-owner of Jose Cuervo, he left his title here in order to follow his own dream of creating the best tequila batches the world has to offer.
With over 200 years of experience in creating tequila, the Beckmann family business is now led by Jorge Beckmann who is the representative of the 8th generation in the Beckmann family line.
Jorge Beckmann has continued to pursue and develop the family business and has done so with passion, flair, and dedication.
The tequila industry has been represented by the Beckmann family for the longest time.
There are several varieties of Lunazul tequila – Reposado, Blanco, Añejo, and Primero.
Each of these types have been rooted and hand-crafted in compliance with the Beckmann family traditions.
This tequila is certainly an affordable luxury. It is a small-batch super-premium tequila with 100% agave.
This brand far surpasses that of its competitors and is some of the best tequila that can be purchased.
Today we are going to dive into a full Lunazul tequila review and dissect their top 4 tequilas.
This tequila is great for the palette and great for the wallet as well. Like all tequilas, the lunazul blanco is double distilled.
However, what makes this particular tequila stand out is its use of traditional alembic cognac stills.
This tequila has been matured for around 9 years which gives it the distinct flavors.
Price: $15 - $25 (750ml)
Alcohol Content: 40%
Appearance – Its body is clear as crystal living up to its “blanco” title. When swirling it does tend to leave a rather light coating around the glass.
It also forms long legs on the glass when swirling. The bottle is a clear square glass shape and it has a black label. This shape is actually quite reminiscent of a Jack Daniels bottle except the neck is shorter and the body is larger.
First Impression – Initial impressions leave me with notes of citrus, roasted peppers, almonds, apples, and vanilla. It has a much fruitier smell to it than most other tequilas made in the highlands and is also much fruitier than those made in lowlands.
Flavor – Delicately fruity to begin with, immediately followed by a pepper and dry mineral tang. It has quite a dry finish and a slight burst of minerals and citrus.
Due to its woody notes and dry taste, this would be excellent for martini drinks, especially the exotic kind. It would also be great with lime and tonic.
If you enjoy a cigar with your tequila then we recommend pairing the blanco with a Romeo Y Julieta or an Ashton.
What Others Have to Say – Many people have stated that they prefer to enjoy this drink as a mixer rather than straight. We say, if you’re looking for a top notch whiskey to add to your cocktails, then this is a great option to go with.
Just as before, like all tequilas, the lunazul reposado is double distilled.
The Reposado tequila has also been matured for around 9 years which gives it the distinct flavors.
Price: $15 - $25 (750ml)
Alcohol Content: 40%
Appearance – Its body is tanned and clear. When swirling it does tend to leave a rather light coating around the glass similar to the blanco.
It also forms long legs on the glass when swirling. The bottle is a clear square glass shape and it has a black label. The bottle shape is the same as the Lunazul Blanco.
First Impression – Initial impressions leave you with citrus flavored notes as well as roasted peppers, apples, vanilla, and almonds. The Reposado isn’t as fruity as the Blanco but it still has fruity hits to it.
Flavor – Delicately fruity to begin with, immediately followed by a pepper and dry mineral tang. The Reposado is a little sweeter than the Blanco due to the wood sugar and vanilla oak. It has a dry finish.
Due to its sweetness, woody notes and dry taste, this would be excellent for martini drinks, especially the exotic kind. The Reposado would also be excellent in a Paloma or margarita.
In fact, it would be great in any tequila cocktail. If you enjoy a cigar with your tequila then we recommend pairing the Reposado with a Romeo Y Julieta or an Ashton.
What Others Have to Say – Many people have stated that there are better tequilas out there than the Lunazul Reposado, but when you compare the price to the product it is definitely the better option of its price range.
This is the latest release of the Lunazul tequila options.
This tequila has been aged in French oak and Bourbon barrels giving it its distinct flavor.
It isn’t notably different from the other options except that it’s slightly more expensive and a little sweeter.
So, if you’re not too set on the flavor profile and are just looking for a tequila to pop into your cocktails then another one from the list might be better suited to you.
Price: $21 - $30 (750ml)
Alcohol Content: 40%
Appearance – Its body is a dark oak color and clear due to the fact it has been aged in oak casks. This particular tequila could easily be mistaken with a young cognac due to its darker appearance.
When swirling it does tend to leave a rather light coating around the glass similar to the previous two. It also forms long legs on the glass when swirling.
First Impression – Initial impressions leave you with notes of roasted peppers, oak, vanilla, and almonds. It has a much fruitier smell than a lot of other tequilas.
Flavor – A neutral start which is immediately followed up with pepper and dry oak tang. There are also hints of tobacco and leather flavorings. The finish is a little oaky but it also has a lovely touch of minerals and citrus.
Due to its woody notes and dry taste, this would be excellent for martini drinks, especially the exotic kind. This tequila is also fabulous mixed with lime and tonic.
What Others Have to Say – Many people have stated that the pricier tequilas are the better option compared to this one, especially for its flavors. However, for the price, we believe that you will still get the best experience you can with this Lunazul.
The Lunazul Primero has a very complex and interesting taste. Some may even say it is quite unusual for a tequila.
This tequila has been filtered so that the wooden tanned tones have been removed from the colorings which is very interesting.
This tequila in particular has been aged for around 18 months as well as being filtered around eight times so that it bears a similar resemblance to the blanco.
Though it isn’t entirely clear why this decision has been made.
Price: $30 - $40 (750ml)
Alcohol Content: 40%
Appearance – Its body is clear as crystal, almost exactly like the blanco. When swirling it does tend to leave a rather light coating around the glass similar to the others. It also forms long legs on the glass when swirling.
First Impression – Initial impressions leave you with notes of pineapple, citrus, apples, almonds, roasted peppers, and vanilla as well as a smell that is a lot fruitier than the others.
There are slight hints of oak char and vanilla as well as wood wrap that give this particular tequila an interesting depth.
Flavor – Delicately fruity to begin with, immediately followed by notes of oak as well as vanilla tastes. The notes of char also distinctly stand out here which is then followed by the hints of pepper and mineral tangs.
It has a dry finish. Due to its woody notes and dry taste, this would be excellent for martini drinks, especially the exotic kind. The Primero would also be excellent in a tonic with lime.
What Others Have to Say – Many people have stated that this is a decent blend between the Añejo and the Blanco.
However, others have said that its flavorings can be quite harsh to taste and that the Añejo is definitely something that you have to get used to especially for those who are new to tequilas.
While there may be better tequilas on the market, Lunazul tequilas are great for those who are looking for an inexpensive option that tastes great in their cocktails and mixers.
We wouldn’t recommend drinking these tequilas neat as there are other options that offer better neat tastes, but if you’re a cocktail enthusiast then this might just be for you.
It is affordable and each different kind offers their own unique set of flavor profiles.
With these reviews and recommendations we hope that you have been able to successfully narrow down which tequila would be the best for you. Remember to drink responsibly!
